Dreyers Grand Ice Cream, DALLAS, TX
Production capacity was nearly doubled for Dreyer’s Novelty Ice Cream plant in Dallas
with the installation of a 950 ton, high-stage refrigeration system in addition to the
existing 1100 refrigerated tons.
Shambaugh & Son, L.P. was awarded another fast-track Design-Build retrofit project
through its established partnership with Edy’s/Dreyer’s. Shambaugh provided innovative
NH3 refrigeration system design, retrofitted and expanded all plant systems and
infrastructures in less than six months for an existing facility which Dreyer’s purchased.
SCOPE OF SERVICES
Shambaugh’s single-source responsibilities included process, refrigeration, controls,
mechanical, electrical and fire protection. The scope of services included enhancing
the current refrigeration control system, as well as upgrading the existing compressor
room, the addition of a 25,000 s.f. freezer and hardener room, the completion of nine
ice cream lines, renovation of the existing process piping, which included raw receiving,
HTST pasteurization, mix and filling lines; the installation of piping on new silos,
flavor tanks, re-melt, ice cream freezers, fillers and CIP system; three new electrical
services were added—power and control wiring for two new production lines—
accomplished with minimal interruption of manufacturing operations.
Value construction engineering, use of prefabricated components, alternative code
designs, and the use of Shambaugh’s qualified site project construction management
and labor forces, resulted in significant cost savings.
