Alan (Al) oversees and directs the delivery of the Design-Build, construction engineering, and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Process) projects. His responsibility begins with understanding the needs and challenges of the client’s facility, continues with the development of the proposal, assists with the preparation of an accurate estimate and establishes a realistic schedule.

Once the client has approved a project, he works with the Program Manager to implement BIM (Building Information Modeling) and other cutting-edge project management tools that create the environment for a safe, on-budget, and timely delivery of the project. He and his team will establish the detailed installation, engineering, and fabrication schedules, secure the identified subcontractors, purchase both the long lead time equipment and materials, direct and monitor all site activities including the schedule of the overall project, an open line communication with the client to ensure they are informed of the project status, commission, startup and turnover the new facility to the client.

The result is to provide the client with a reliable, high-performance facility controlled by state-of-the-art systems that provides both an efficient operation and the desired return on investment.


Alan helps ensure that all Shambaugh construction projects result in the kind of high-performance solutions clients need for optimum operation, reliability and value. He also ensures that safety policies are communicated and implemented, that employees receive the training they need to keep their expertise up to date, and that the company’s construction services are maintained at the highest levels. The result is projects delivered consistently on time and on budget to clients’ most demanding expectations. His strong engineering and construction background, actual on-site installation supervision, and the experience of creating budgets and estimates provides a technical expertise that is integrated into both the Design-Build and Design-Bid-Build-type projects.

Alan has nearly 40 years of experience in the construction industry. His capabilities, duties and experience encompass all aspects of the business from the field installation to the responsibility as past President/CEO of an EMCOR electrical contracting company doing $70M annually, to working with clients to establishing project budgets, final engineering, schedules and project management on specific projects. Al’s on-site project management experience has included total project responsibility varying in size and complexity up to $300M. He has been on-site and involved with project management both in the US and overseas.

Alan earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in nuclear engineering from Michigan Technological University. He is a past board member (six years) of the Council for Labor and Economic Growth for the State of Michigan (appointed by the Governor). Members of the board serve in an advisory capacity to the Governor and the Director of the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth, and are charged with the development and continuous improvement of a Statewide Workforce Investment System. He is also a member of NECA and the American Legion.

The Personal Side

Alan and his wife, Penny, have two daughters, two sons and three grandchildren. In addition to his family Alan enjoys hunting, fishing, and playing golf. Alan was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of Lieutenant before leaving the service.
